QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA — If not for my friend who posted his status on Facebook, I would not have known that this was the last day we celebrate Special Education Awareness Week. Then I learned that a group of people are spreading the word to participate by placing this “message” on their profiles like blogger Cristina who posted these touching lines:
“People need to understand that children with special needs don’t have an illness, so there is no cure & it’s not contagious. They only want what we all want, to be accepted. 93% of you probably won’t copy and paste this. Will you be in the 7% that will and leave it on your status for at least an hour? It’s Special Education Awareness week.”
Some people often consider persons with special needs as persons with illnesses or sometimes use them for inappropriate jokes, but we have to understand that they happen to be special and that we have to give them special attention instead of ridicule.
This year, Maritess Alcantara and her 14-year-old son became subject to such ridicule. According to Inquirer.net, Alcantara and her son were on a Cebu Pacific flight back to Manila from Hong Kong when the airline purser asked them to get off the plane because of a rule that no two “mentally ill” passengers are allowed on the same flight.
In line with this, a loving couple shared their story through a video of their wonderful son diagnosed with Down syndrome. The couple created an audio visual presentation about how proud and blessed they are for having Marcus in their lives. In their video, they expressed that they had not done anything for Marcus to become such, but Down syndrome occurs in one out of 733 live births.
The couple showed that love and understanding for these special children should start at home from parents and relatives. This way, they will also start believing in themselves and give them a chance to live a life as everyone else’s equal — economically, socially and emotionally.
To better understand SPED and how the government is helping special children, you may visit the Department of Education’s website and find out how you can also help promote SPED awareness.
