QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA— Swimming in pools and beaches is the perfect escape to the summer heat. But before bringing your child with you, make sure you know how to keep them safe from accidents, especially, drowning.
In a television report, just after the Holy Week, a six-year old kid drowned in La Carmela Resort de Boracay allegedly because there was no lifeguard when the incident happened. The kid was revived by guest doctors but died after two days in the hospital.
About.com: Pediatrics provided safety tips to prevent drowning which is one of the major causes of deaths among children, particularly in the United States. First, never leave a child unsupervised and instruct babysitters about potential hazards in and around swimming pools. Also advise them to constantly keep watch of the kids while they are swimming.
It is also important for pool or resort owners to install gates or barriers to secure and prevent small children from getting to the pool area alone. Nevertheless, bear in mind that there is no substitute for constant supervision so there should always be life-saving devices and life guards in the area.
American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), meanwhile, provided eight tips for swimming pool safety. According to AAP, parents should not assume that teaching their child how to swim is an assurance that they’d be safe in the water. It is a must that adults know CPR and life-saving techniques in times of emergency. Also, choose a resort that has enough facilities to keep your child safe.
Family outings are meant to bring the family closer. Rightly so, above everything else, always take the responsibility of watching over your kids so you can be sure that your family excursion doesn’t end tragically.
