MANILA, METRO MANILA – Lotion, cream or powder are no longer options when it comes to treating yourself to a “fish spa” experience.
Instead, you have doctor fishes – known worldwide as “garra rufa” – doing all the work. The doctor fish is a small tropical fish that can live in warm water and feed themselves by eating dead cells of the human body.
But these are no piranha, they chew away your dead skin and you only feel a slight tickle. The doctor fish has no teeth and uses lips when eating and while it is sucking your dead skin, this helps promote blood circulation and relaxes the nervous system.
My friends and I once tried it at the Manila Ocean Park, what we thought was a good ending to a long tour at the marine park. We were each given towel and as soon as I dipped my feet into the water, the fishes circled them immediately.
At first, it tickled I almost screamed. But I think the trick is to simply relax and try to reach the floor with your feet so you get used to it. Likewise, in his blog, Rejyr suggests you should have someone to hold on to – preferably someone who will get tickled as much.
You also have a choice whether or not to dip into the pool with bigger fishes, which do the job faster but can be quite scary to behold. Nonetheless, the fish spa is touted to be a better experience than simply getting a foot massage in a salon.
I also tried the fish spa at Star City, which is cheaper (at P50) and tickles less because the fishes are smaller. So, for those who haven’t tried it yet, I highly recommend it. Not only do you get to relax your tired feet, you also get to feed the fishes without much effort.
If you’re not taking the oceanarium tour, you can go directly to second floor and attendants will lead you the fish spa area. A 20-minute session costs P120.
