LUCBAN, QUEZON — Lighting a candle is said to help our prayers be heard by the Almighty as well as enlighten the souls of those we’re praying for. But did you know that each color of a candle represents a different meaning?
In churches, you’ll notice that each has candle stands for those who are praying for wishes and other intentions. But in Kamay ni Hesus, you would see a candle stand where multi-colored candles can be bought for P5. Beside it is a poster explaining the meanings of each color.
White candle is for giving thanks. White stands for purity and as Christians, we thank God with our pure hearts for His gift of life.
When we light a green candle, it means we’re praying for our intention or petition. We pray to God to give us a sustainable and better life with continuous grace.
If you want reconciliation with God, the violet-colored candle should be lit as violet stands for penance. This is lighted when we wish for atonement for the wrongs we’ve done and ask for forgiveness for our sins.
Pink candle is for special intentions. It means we are to offer sacrifices for other people, especially for our loved ones. Pink symbolizes happiness and upon lighting the candle, it means we wish to serve others in a spiritual way.
And for those who have already united with God in heaven, we light blue candles as they are now connected to the sky. This is to send them our wish that they may be welcomed by the Creator in heaven.
As we reflect this Lenten season, light your candles and take time to talk to God in your most sacred way.
