TAGUIG CITY, METRO MANILA — Weaving rugs and doormats help Cabañez family survive everyday life.
Carmelita Cabañez and her family used to earn money from collecting recyclable trashes which they sell to junk shops. Desperate to find a better source of income, Cabañez decided to learn how to weave doormats and sell them on her own.
A mother of four kids, Cabañez eventually thought of passing on the skill to her children. Apart from being a source of livelihood, weaving together served as a bonding time for the family as well.
Wanting to sustain their small business, Cabañez felt the need for a bigger capital. She found support from a livelihood program offered by the Rotary Club Fort Bonifacio Global City. The program was targeted at helping the poor constituents of Taguig by teaching them how to weave mats, make newspaper bags and dried fish. They formed a cooperative where they could earn dividends from the products they sell.
“It was really hard to have a capital for us and I’m thankful that the cooperative is there to sustain this (weaving business), ” Cabañez said.
Cabañez makes 30 doormats a day. She said she never had a hard time asking her kids to help because they too earn from it.
“When they want to buy something, my kids know that they can only have it if they work hard,” shared Cabañez adding that their needs in school motivated the children to do even better.
Cabañez is also one of the Napindan recipients of a sewing machine from the Rotary Club. She uses this to sew rugs for added income.
Today, Cabañez family depends on their earnings from the Rotary Cooperative. However, Carmelita admitted that she also wishes to put up her own business in the future.
If the church says, “the family that prays together, stays together”, Cabañez family lives by the saying — “the family that weaves together, earns together.”
