MAKATI CITY, METRO MANILA — Die-hard collectors don’t mind spending thousands of pesos on a particular pair of sneakers especially if it’s a limited model. Some don’t even dare take them out of the box. But if you do wear them, how exactly can you keep those precious sneakers in good condition?
Sole Movement, a local blog on sneakers and street culture authored by Martin David, blogged about the Jason Markk Premium Sneaker Solution. (In turn, Martin’s post was cited in the California-based company’s own blog.)
The cleaning solution is ingeniously packaged into what looks exactly like a shoebox. It includes a brush, a small towel and of course, a liquid cleaning solution. Martin tested the product himself and was satisfied with the results.
If this sounds a bit expensive, Kian del Mundo, part-owner of sneaker store Commune, offers a really practical (and cheap) alternative — toothpaste, preferably the white one (Incidentally, Martin says Commune will be selling the Jason Markk solution for P2,200).
Use an ordinary toothbrush to clean the outsole (or the bottom part of the sneakers). No need to wash them with water, just wipe clean with an ordinary cloth towel.
Aside from dirt and grime, humidity also wreaks havoc on sneakers especially if not worn regularly. Kian says some collectors even buy two pairs of the same model – one to wear, the other to keep.
So it pays to invest in shoe boxes and enough storage space to avoid “caking,” or when the sole becomes soft and disintegrates after not being worn for months. After all, if you’re willing to invest hard-earned cash on those sneakers, why not go the extra mile to take care of them?
