MANILA, METRO MANILA — In the busy street of Morayta, people on the rush can’t help but stop for a while to see the 20-minute show of two celebrity-like dogs named Habagat and Bagwis trained by their master and best friend Sergio Redolosa.
The two dogs draw crowds as they showcase their knowledge in counting, adding, subtracting and expressing the phrases “I love you” and “thank you” through barking. Because of this, celebrity sometimes comes their way, and Habagat even became part of the “Mga Kwento ni Lola Basyang” television series and the “Enteng Kabisote” movie. But just like other celebrities, luck isn’t always on their side.
Redolosa’s pets, mongrels of local descent, find their spotlight in the streets of Morayta in the mornings and afternoons. During weekends, the streets near SM Manila and Quezon Avenue become their stage. Regalado understands the fact that fame onscreen isn’t always their destiny but being the breadwinner of the family, he has no choice but to make his pets shine to get food on the table.
He also has other pets — Amihan and a trained cat — but Bagwis and Habagat are the ones he likes to go out with to put up a show.
To Redolosa, his pets are like life partners as seven years have passed since they have been holding shows to survive everyday life. He could not afford to have his pets get sick and handle the high cost of pet medicine. The health and medicine of his children, of course, comes first.
At times, animal rights advocates approach him to discuss animal rights, but he staunchly declares that he has never maltreated his pets. Had he been bad to his pets, Bagwis and Habagat could have just left him and gone to someone else, but despite a long day’s performance, the dogs still go back to their master and their small home as a family.
If you want to catch Redolosa and his pets’ performance, their usual street stage is at Morayta corner España Boulevard in front on Chowking at around 10:30 in the morning and around 2:30 in the afternoon.
