MAKATI CITY, METRO MANILA – In Manila alone, you’ll be surprised at how many more local coffee shops that are ideal alternatives to Starbucks.

Like it or not, people spend way too much on a cup of coffee not because they’re connoisseurs but because they need to be in a place to kill time or have unlimited access to WiFi.

These coffee shops, some you would find outside of the city, offer all that  – cheaper than Starbucks but great coffee selection, nonetheless.

ECHOcafe – If you’re a Choc-nut freak than you have to try ECHOcafe’s Choc-Nut Shake (P115). It’s a lot sweeter than your conventional brews because it actually a coffee-infused milkshake with Choc-nut bits in every sip. This café happens to operate along the lines of sustainability and locavorism.

Chicco Di’ Caffe – I bet you haven’t sip on durian-infused coffee or Coffee Halo-Halo? This café is owned by a Davaoeño who seeks to mainstream their pride fruit through the coffee chain. Don’t fret yet since they managed to take away the repulsive smell of durian in these drinks.

Ato’s Rack Billiards & Coffeenista – A game of pool over a cup of espresso may seem odd at first but these can be enjoyed separately with Coffeenista’s loungy Coffeoke area where yes, guests can enjoy a song or two in after a few shots of their house-blended brews. The café also sells hand-made knick-knacks.

KSEM’s Kafe – Once you have their Choco Chip Frozen Mocha (P100), you’ll never look at frappes the same way again. This café is run by an NGO that operates to keep street children off the streets of Ermita and Malate. Even their excellent baristas used to be street children themselves.

Holly’s Coffee- This isn’t exactly the cheapest but their Korean-inspired coffee like the Korean Sweet Potato Latte seems like a must-try. The place can’t get any cozier.

Kape Diperensya- If you want to get a little adventurous, this café in Baguio is a revelation. Their soya-coffee (P80) is heavenly especially when matched with their Danish cookies. It’s owned by visual artist Benhur Villanueva so you’re in for an artistic treat.
