MUNTINLUPA CITY, METRO MANILA — “Great things come to those who wait,” its wrapping says. And this Japanese-inspired dessert is definitely one treat worth waiting for.
Mochiko’s Mochi has become one of the most visited and crazed delights in the series of weekend food markets and bazaars that have hit Metro Manila by storm.
Mochi is a round-shaped Japanese delicacy made from glutinous rice and is considered most popular during the Japanese New Year similar to that of the Chinese’s Nian gao.
Mochiko was first made available by owners Nowie and Odette Potenciano at The Cliffhouse Tagaytay where two of their other shops–the FIC Summer Café and the Fling Frozen Yogurt–are also located.
While the traditional mochi would often compliment Japanese soups and the like, Mochiko’s version is that of an ice-cream filled mochi. Foodies can get to choose among its 11 flavors like Mango, Strawberry, Chocolate, Caramel and Vanilla, to name a few.
Their top sellers include the Cookie Dough, Azuki or Red Bean, Avocado and the Green Tea filling.
Before you think about biting at your mochi ball fresh from the freezer, you’ll have to wait a couple of minutes or so for it to thaw.
This can build up quite an excitement, especially if it’s your first time to taste one like I was.
But the wait was worth the sweet treat that came after with the plain flavor of the mochi fusing well with the ice cream making the sweetness of it just right. A mochi ball is priced at P70 per piece or P400 for six pieces.
