LOS BAÑOS, LAGUNA– The Department of Science and Technology (DoST) is calling on local government units to come up with designated areas for street food vendors to ensure quality and safety.

This also includes assisting, controlling and maintaining the quality of the product as well as educating vendors on safe food handling.

Municipal governments in selected areas of Laguna and Batangas have established a street food upgrading program, which identifies registered vendors and provides them with priority training on the know-hows of food safety.

Among the topics tackled are the issues on “double-dead” livestock and refraining from the use of non-food grade colorings and the use of formalin to preserve fresh produce.

The bureau is also recommending a designated model of street food areas that other cities and municipalities can replicate.

“Clustering makes it possible to operate with common facilities such as potable water, electricity, waste disposal services and toilets, among others,” said DoST regional director Dr. Alex Madrigal.

Prototypes on improving the design and construction of vending carts have also been proposed, which are equipped with glass panel covers and closed containers.

Consumers were also advised to take part in improving the safety and quality of street food as well as educating themselves with the risks that come with food-borne diseases.

“Through their purchasing power, consumers provide perhaps the strongest motivating force for vendors to alter their food-handling practices,” Madrigal added.
