MAKATI CITY, METRO MANILA— Tapsihans are available in almost every corner of the city but finding silog meals that are both delicious and cheap is sometimes the difficult part.

Such is my quest when trying to find an affordable diner that serves quality tapsilog meals along E. Jacinto Avenue corner Kalayaan in the bustling neighborhood of Guadalupe in Makati.

Commuters and casual diners like me would agree that nothing beats hunger than a well-cooked silog meal.

The unassuming diner called Queen Dee Tapsihan seems a good choice given the regular influx of customers and their affordable silogs. There is a whole list comprising of over 40 different dishes that you can choose from.

Tapsihans are named so after their prime product tapsilog, a word play on beef tapa, sinangag (fried rice) and pritong itlog (fried egg). Later on, they added other combinations such as Maling luncheon meat, longganisa and other types of meat that can be easily cooked.

From the list, my friend and I tried their sisig rice meal (P35) and tapsilog (39). The food was served after only three minutes of waiting along with a hot bowl of their bulalo soup.

There is nothing fancy in terms of the plating of the dish itself but the smell of the hot tapa combined with the smell of the sisig served on a hot plate interested us enough that we immediately dig in to satisfy our hungry tummies.

The beef tapa is cut into bits of soft and flavorful pieces, which is ideal to eat with fried egg and rice. The staff told us they marinate and cook the beef daily because it is the store’s bestseller – also the secret why the beef remains soft to the bite.

Actually, you can enjoy the beef without any condiments at all because the mix of soy sauce, calamansi and a hint of barbeque sauce on the meat is more than enough flavor.

For the sisig, it is a generous serving and a cupful of rice. In most bars, you would normally pay twice or thrice the amount to get the same serving so the sisig meal is actually a steal. The sisig is moist and topped with fresh egg on top, so make sure to mix them immediately on the hot plate to cook the egg.

Overall, the place is a must-go for commuters, students and casual diners who are looking for delicious meals within their budget.
