PLARIDEL, BULACAN – If you’re the kind of person who doesn’t fancy mushrooms too much, that’s probably because you haven’t had it the way Aurora Sumulong makes it.

Since Aurora, or Mommy Au as she is called in her hometown, retired from her previous job as a government employee, she fully turned her attention to her second love – cooking.

With her impeccable taste for food, she started a catering business that would later make her one of the most sought-after food concessionaires in Plaridel.

Mom’s Haus of Mushroom came about two years ago when, during a regular visit to the palengke, the 62-year-old saw an abundance of mushrooms.

A church counselor, Mommy Au has always stressed the importance of enriching ones mind, body and spirit, which is why she started to advocate for the inclusion of mushrooms in her catered recipes.

Two years of experimentation led Mommy Au to perfecting two mushroom products, the Pickled Mushroom and Crispy Mushroom, which became a hit among locals in her hometown.

Unlike other pickled vegetables, Pickled Mushroom isn’t just good as a garnishing or appetizer. It’s can also be a guilt-free alternative ingredient to meat-based dishes.

Her Crispy Mushroom is likewise made less sinful with Mommy Au choosing to oven-bake the mushroom after it is deep-fried. Tastes just like chicharon (pork rinds) but less salty and vitamin-enriched.

As her business, Mommy Au realized she simply cannot depend on getting her weekly mushroom supply from the local market. So she talked to local mushroom growers to become her suppliers, her way of helping them to have sustainable livelihood.

She also began dealing with mushroom growers in Tagaytay, which opened doors for her business in terms of supplying retailers and distributors.

In trade fairs, Mom’s Haus of Mushroom products are sold from P80 to P120. She also sells banana and camote or sweet potato chips.

An enterprising person whose love for business remains in her sixties, Mommy Au lives by simple beliefs.

“Live life to the fullest by considering the benefits of the simplest things and enjoying those long-term benefits while you can,” she says.
