MANILA, METRO MANILA— Ice cream is truly one of the most common comfort food for both kids and adults alike. Over the years, it has evolved from the traditional chocolate and vanilla to more fancy variants like the choco-nutty Rocky Road and the butter-gooey Double Dutch.
Our love for this cold treat had us making alternatives fit for the cravings of the figure conscious. Health buffs can opt for soya or natural oil-flavored ice creams at the Paradis Natural Ice Cream or they can travel way up north and choose from Brungo Ice Cream‘s array of veggie flavors.
For curious and adventurous foodies, the Sampaguita Ice Cream at Ilustrado Cafe and Restaurant is definitely a must-try.
Ilustrado’s manager Bea Pimentel tells me it is actually made from the extract of fresh sampaguita flowers and churned in an old-school ice cream maker. The dessert is a hit even for Ilustrado first-timers and also during events and wedding hosted at the reception.
You get served a couple of scoops of the sampaguita ice cream topped with a chocolate wafer. At first glance, it looked just like vanilla ice cream due to its color.
The first scoop had me tasting and smelling the flower all at the same time. The good thing about it was that the scent didn’t over power the mild sweetness the ice cream had. I was able to enjoy more of the taste itself a few more scoops after.
Though relatively smaller compared to the usual serving of an ice cream, I’d like to think the amount was just right since a mouthful definitely lingers enough to have you thinking your breath smells like sampaguita.

This unique, sweet treat is priced at P120 and is available at the Ilustrado Restaurant in Intramuros and their Cafe in SM Makati.
