MAKATI CITY, METRO MANILA -Located in what used to be an electrical supply shop in Pasong Tamo is a pizza house that’s slowly gaining popularity for its scrumptious specialties.

Aside from many commercial establishments, Pasong Tamo is slowly becoming populated with restaurants. One of which is Gorky’s Pizzeria, an unassuming restaurant that offers American style pizza and pasta dishes.

I had a short chat with Amos Pancho, the restaurant’s manager and long-time friend of owner Ernesto Garcia.

Amos shares that the restaurant -  from the concept down to the food – is inspired by Ernesto’s travels abroad, particularly in Los Angeles, where the latter’s family is currently based.

I asked Amos if the name “Gorky” was borrowed from the name of a famous amusement park in Moscow but he was uncertain. What he did confirm was that Ernesto named it after a park abroad. Nonetheless, I was bracing myself for a roller-coaster dining experience.

As suggested by a friend, I tried the Cheese Pizza, and the best-selling Gorky’s Spicy Shrimp Pasta. To save, I opted for their combo meal which already had my choice of pizza, red-sauce pasta and regular iced tea for P149.

However, you could always go for the single order selections if you think you can handle their 10-inch to 18-inch pizzas.

While waiting for my order, I browsed the place and it somehow reminded me of the pizza houses I’ve seen in American movies. It had round silver plates that almost looked like pizza platters glued to the restaurant’s ceiling.

The menu, including a dessert called Lava Cake (P70), was written with colored chalks on blackboard which was fastened against the kitchen counter.

Waiting time was just right given that groups of people had started coming in for dinner and they only had a few heads on duty. Amos advises customers to visit the restaurant before peak hours which is from lunch time to 3pm and 7pm to 10pm.

My pasta platter was brimming with red sauce which is always a plus factor for red-sauce pasta fans. The shrimp, albeit meager, was perfectly firm and flavorful, so was the pasta.

For someone who actually eats, I found their pizza serving too small. Thankfully, the mozzarella and parmesan cheese on my order was a lot tastier than I expected. It had a peculiar milky flavor which, although odd, was somewhat endearing.

Some say the milky flavor could have come from the pizza’s dough, but then again, I had no way of confirming and I think it’s better left a mystery especially for the benefit of others who haven’t tried it.

Amos says they are motivated to serve better with the positive feedback they’ve been receiving from customers coming all the way from Quezon City. This is precisely why they decided to extend their delivery service to those living up North.

“Our customers are important to us. We try to accommodate their orders and requests wherever they are in Manila. We are always open for these special arrangements,” Amos says.

With the restaurant’s excellent service and the tasty house specialties, Gorky’s Pizzeria rightfully deserves another visit. I promised Amos I will definitely come back to try their other pizzas and pasta, although next time, I’m bringing along a group of friends.
