BACOLOD, NEGROS OCCIDENTAL – Beer drinkers can thank this Ilonggo entrepreneur for producing beer that is not only uniquely flavored but is also packed with health benefits.

An avid beer drinker, Felix Hagad established Bob’s Fruit Farms in 2007 with his wife  Cathy. Felix says very few Filipinos are aware that there is a lot more in beer than the common fact that it intoxicates and can cause a nasty hangover.

“There are about 20,000 kinds of beer in the world. In the course of developing this business, I learned that there are limitless possibilities one can explore to produce other varieties,” he says.

Felix produces two varieties of beer, namely BogsBrew Original Craft Beer and Primo All-grain Beer, which he considers “craft” or artisanal beverages.

Our approach in producing beer is somehow localized. The processes, the ingredients even the way these were handled have that handmade touch,” he says.

Felix adds that the concept is not entirely new in the country but the materials used for the brews differ. Negros is abundant with sugar cane, which is exactly why Felix chose organic muscovado sugar as the dominant component of his craft beers.

Commercial beer is usually composed of barley, hops, yeast and water, but Felix formulates his beers to have sub-components that mitigate the effects of hangover such as wild bee honey, organic rice, malt extracts, hops, and lemon-grass, a powerful antioxidant.

Also unique to BogsBrew Original Craft Beer and Primo All-Grain beer is the sediment that settles at the bottom of the bottle also known as “brewer’s yeast.” These are actual sugar and yeast from which B-complex vitamins can be acquired.

“When we drink beer, B-complex vitamins react to the alcohol to lessen the effects of a hangover. However when we lack those much needed vitamins, it makes it harder for our body to cope with the effects,” Felix explains.

Though both have only a four-percent alcohol content, BogsBrew Original Craft Beer and Primo All-Grain are actually “strong.” The Primo All-Grain beer is a bit lighter to the taste but both are easy and smooth enough to chug in one go.

Felix markets his craft beers in trade fairs for 45 and 60 pesos every time he gets the chance to leave Bacolod. These are also being served in Cafe Bob’s Deli, Korean Grill and Bar, Cafe Uma, Bob’s in Paseo de Magallanes and CaB Gelato in Kapitolyo-Pasig. These are also distributed in weekend markets in Salcedo and Legaspi in Makati.

Apart from the craft beers, the couple also sells other ready to eat homemade products such as dips, shrimp paste and sauces from 100 to 170 pesos.

This enterprising architect takes the business seriously not only because it was 25 years in the making but also because he wants the brand to be something Negrenses can be proud of.

“I still have a lot to learn but with the way things are going, I can really say that I have no regrets in going into this business,” Felix says.
