QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA –Whoever said you can’t have authentic Aussie beer in the middle of the day? At Wicked Kitchen, you can have your fix of malt-infused dishes round the clock.

Located along Mother Ignacia Avenue (just behind ABS-CBN), Wicked Kitchen, one of the newest restaurants along this bustling food strip. Incessant raves about the place were convincing enough for me to visit.

The two-storey resto-bar was quite small but this allowed for an intimate al-fresco dining experience.

With only a few tables and chairs, the place can easily get packed at night since the place usually offer promos for beers and cocktails.

To non-beer drinkers, most of the meals here don’t taste anything like beer; neither are these intoxicating, only infused or steamed with beer. Nonetheless, this is quite a novelty in an industry that never ceases to offer something new.

Their menu is basically a mix of Western and Australian cuisine, which explains the unique variety of food and “nibbles” they serve. For starters I went for Broccoli and Cheese Chowder (P99). It came in smoldering hot, smelling really herby and light and the crunchy parmesan croutons weren’t any less. It was gritty, creamy and consistently light just the way I like my chowder.

I ordered one of their best sellers, Fish and Chips (P185), for my main meal, which is basically beer-battered fish fillet with fries as sidings. You can always request to change your fries with either mashed potatoes or rice.

The fish was definitely fresh but could use a little more taste with the thick beer-batter and the dip that came with it. I wasn’t sure how to use the slice of lemon that came with the platter but when I squeezed it over the fillet, it drastically improved the flavor.

Other beer-infused entrees in the menu include the Beer and Beef Pie (P209), Fish Surf Sandwich (P180), Drunken Seafood Platter (P240) and the Beefsteak N’ Onion Rings (P155).

After I downed my hearty beer platter, it was time for the highlight of my visit which was the famous dessert they call “Gluttony” (P145). It was a giant piece of freshly baked chocolate chip cookie and on top, a scoop of mantecado ice cream.

Looking at it was so overwhelming I felt my insides tighten. True to its name, its serving was too big that the solo order was good enough for sharing. It helped that the cookie was fresh out of the oven and was still hot and moist but even that wasn’t motivating enough for me to finish this dessert myself.

My total spend? P450. It’s a little heavy for a solo flighter, which is why meals here are best shared with a group. The experience, however, was unlike any other. I’ll definitely come back to try the rest of their “drunken” dishes.
