QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA – Former OFW-turned-entrepreneur Nina Tongson initially started baking desserts as a hobby and as a way of killing time when off from work.
She established her own business Sweet Hope to bake her cookies, delicious cakes, and other pastries. “One thing I noticed is that most Pinoys go for quantity and not the quality of a product, even with desserts,” Nina says.
The dessert connoisseur further says she makes sure her cupcakes and pastries don’t fall short on ingredients.
“It’s therapeutic in a way because I merely estimate the use of ingredients and that somewhat tests my creativity as a baker,” she says, adding that she combines this with the artistic influence she gets from her children.
While in the US, her healthy homemade treats became a hit among her colleagues.
“In the US, once they know the product comes with health benefits, they buy the product with no questions asked because they know its value for money,” Nina says.
At home, Nina makes the most moist and scrumptious cookies that are packed with multi-grains like cereals, whole wheat, and other goodies like macadamia and chocolates.
Due to the high prices of baking ingredients in the country, Nina says she uses imported ingredients, particularly for her cupcakes with peaches and moist cakes.
Even so, she sells all Sweet Hope pastries in bazaars for only P20. She also caters to the younger market with chocolate pops for P12.
“You can’t entice people to turn to healthy desserts when you price it too high. This way, I can negate the notion that to be healthy entails a considerable level of spending,” Nina says.
In bazaars, Nina continues to propagate the virtue of wise spending among Filipinos which can be practiced even just by buying a piece of a healthy home-made treat.
“If the quality is there, people will patronize the product so really, the competition is narrowed down to what just looks good to what actually gives something else apart from the good taste for an affordable price,” Nina says.
