GAPAN CITY, NUEVA ECIJA – Better Country Community Corporation (BCCC) is among the many rice producers from this province and one of its goals is to promote the many health benefits of eating brown rice.
BCCC Secretary Mae delos Santos says this direction is initially challenging for BCCC.
“When others are going in one direction, it takes courage and discipline to risk opportunities and go the other way,” Mae says.
Mae says the company’s owner Paciano Reyes started the business five years ago with the goal of promoting brown rice as a healthy alternative to well-milled rice.
Brown rice is also called unpolished or gilded grain rice. Like the conventional rice grain, brown rice is also milled. However, the bran layer and germinal tip of the grain which has the highest concentration of nutrients and minerals are left in the milling process of brown rice.
Mae says Paciano came from a family who never ate polished or well-milled rice. She adds that he really wanted to educate individual consumers and households who may not be aware of the benefits of eating brown rice.
Today, Mae says interest in brown rice has been increasing. Below are the many benefits of brown rice consumption:
Brown rice is ideal for people on a strict high-fiber diet compared to polished rice, because it is denser when cooked. This means even with less of it, one can still feel full which can help a person regulate blood sugar levels, prevent cardiovascular diseases and eliminate constipation.
Brown rice has more protein, has three times as many vitamins and minerals, and has four times the fiber of white rice.
Brown rice cleanses the body and boosts the immune system. The bran of brown rice is very rich in anti-oxidants and phytonutrients which work hand in hand to detoxify and enhance body functions.
Mae says these are just a few of the health benefits of brown rice. Yet even in a rice-eating country, Mae says these still need to educate many consumers on living healthy.
One good thing is that brown rice from Nueva Ecija is not as expensive as those grown from the highlands, Mae says.
“We try to keep the prices lower because we don’t want them to stop on just trying the product, we want these to be affordable enough for them to actually maintain their brown rice diet,” Mae says.
Brown rice is just like white rice in that it comes in different varieties. Tastes and scents vary on the kind of unpolished rice but the Ilang-Ilang (P130) is one of the most popular for its enticing aroma, as well as the Jasmin (P120), and Dinorado (P110). The Red Gold (P130) and Black Gold (P90) are also popular for their unique tastes.
“We should never forget to go back to the basics and invest in our health in this fast changing times,” Mae says.
