GERONA, TARLAC— Serving native Filipino dishes, the Isdaan Floating Restaurant is a popular stopover for groups traveling to Baguio, Ilocos and other destinations in North Luzon.
The Isdaan experience, though, isn’t just about the food. For starters, you will be ushered into a nipa hut that’s floating in what looks like a fishpond. Prepare to be serenaded with their chorale of cooks and waiters.
Highly recommended dishes include the Crispy Pata, Lechong Manok, Lechon De Leche and Ginataang Hipon Sipitsipitan (prawn) Luto Sa Buho.
The restaurant is easily recognizable with its mammoth statues of fishes (and Buddha-like figures). It is where tourists often cap their stay with the requisite photo-op. Oh, and those Buddha statues serve as “wishing” wells – just pop in a coin or two.
Interestingly, there’s also a statue of the late former President Cory Aquino seeking advice from the late Cardinal Jaime Sin.
If you wish to be challenged and have a kilo of fish for free, then you can try crossing the “Sang Kilo Bridge” – you carry a kilo of fish and cross a 20 centimeters-wide, 30 meters- long bridge decorated with hanging sea shells meant to distract you. Be prepared to take a dip into the fishpond, if unsuccessful.
But what made this restaurant famous (or infamous) is the “Tacsiyapo Wall” - tacsiyapo is a swear word in the local dialect. You have a choice of plates, utensils, even an old TV set you can smash into the wall, ideally cursing your lungs out.
But take note, though, each item carries a corresponding charge, so you better think twice about hurling whatever fancies your eye.
Gerona is a few towns away from the main Tarlac City. Isdaan Restaurant is on the left side of McArthur Highway. You may want to read personal accounts from bloggers Sanden2007 and Pinay commuter
