TANAY, RIZAL— For Carmelita Desuasido, Tanay’s cold weather and fresh air makes it an ideal place to plant and grow coffee.

This sparked Carmelita’s interest on starting her own coffee brewery. Carmelita happens to have a six-hectare land in Barangay Sampaloc, a barrio elevated from the town proper with a weather as cold as the weather in Tagaytay.

She says she always wondered why there is less supply of ‘kapeng barako’ in her hometown considering that hot coffee and a cold weather complement each other.

Carmelita started planting arabica coffee with the help of some farmers. After days of waiting for the harvest, she started thinking of the perfect packaging for her product. She later called it Tanay Hills Coffee Beanery.

“I think what makes my coffee special is because I dry the coffee myself, I roast it and I package it. So for sure I know the quality of service I am giving to my customers,” Carmelita says.

However, the business of selling ‘kapeng barako’ was not easy because many locals are not really fond of the brew so she had to find other markets for her product.

In June 2010, she tried introducing her product to China, but the Chinese are more into tea than coffee.

But these difficulties didn’t stop Carmelita from producing coffee. Now she is actively participating in food expositions and slowly, she is getting a carving her niche in the market.

Carmelita says she also has some Manila-based customers who now regularly patronize her coffee.

“I know that entering the coffee industry is really tough, but this is what I really love doing. And if there is one thing I am proud of, it is because I know that I am serving good coffee to the public,” Carmelita says.
