BACOOR, CAVITE – Bing Angeles started her food business in 2005 with tahong chips as her main product. In 2009, she decided to set up Farm Delight, this time selling different kinds of tea leaves and local plants as healthy snacks.
“I wanted to broaden the use of these leaves more than just for drinking,” Bing says.
She also sells banaba, lagundi, saluyot, and sambong chips. With a simple process of “binding and hardening” the leaves, Bing is able to make these leaves more appealing as a power snack even for picky eaters.
But more than just snacks, Bing sees her unique chips as a response to the lack of sources of organic food in the market and the lack of interest of most people living in urban areas with organic farming.
The leaves contain insulin-like properties, anti-ageing and hypertension components. For Bing, the challenge is to reach out and educate the younger generation about the benefits of eating chips other than empty junk food.
Apart from chips made of tea leaves, Bing also processes chips out of carrots, ginger, bitter melon, squash and malunggay.
She admits that the business is challenging, but putting her efforts in the business is worth it to educate more customers about healthy eating.
“It’s either you gain good health, or you lose it,” she says.
