QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA - Icings Cakes. Breads. Café is a favorite among diet-conscious diners who just can’t neglect the desire of the sweet tooth.
Primarily a pastry shop specializing in cakes and pastries, Icings Cakes. Breads. Café is also becoming popular for its special entrées and good service.
I visited the café recently and a waiter immediately approached me for my order. I wasn’t really craving for a heavy meal so I settled with Mango Pandan Cake (P90) and fresh Pandan Juice (P65) for a light meryenda.
While waiting for my order, I noticed that majority of the customers were in corporate attire. I can’t help but notice how most of them were just joking around and chit-chatting with their officemates.
I guess it’s safe to assume that they go to Icings Cakes. Breads. Café to de-stress and enjoy their coffee and cakes.
My order came and the cake didn’t look very promising at first. It was pale in color and looked awfully light that I feared a slice was not satisfying enough.
My fork sliced flawlessly to the base of the Mango Pandan Cake suggesting the good quality of baking ingredients used. When swabbed on the mango puree that was drizzled all over the plate, the flavor of the pandan contrasted with the mango even more.
The five layers of mango and pandan cream, cake and the thin icing worked harmoniously. True to its name, the icing was smooth and glossy, not like the cheap-o frosting that gives the umay factor to most cakes.
I could care less about my diet but I found at that Icings uses sorbitol as an alternative sweetening agent to the cakes. This type of sugar contains fewer calories which makes a slice of their cake a guiltless treat. Even the breads also have this sugar ingredient.
The Pandan Juice had that leafy taste that pandan normally produces, but I hope it was a little sweeter since the taste of the cake countered the sugar in this drink.
The tapioca ball added more fun to drinking it and it took forever for me to finish it since the tall glass and ice somehow made it a bottomless drink.
Dining at Icings Cakes. Breads. Café might be a bit on the pricey side, but the generous serving of great cakes in an intimate and relaxed space is worth it.
