PAOAY, ILOCOS NORTE – Lolita Piamonte used to sell banana chips, but the abrupt change in weather drastically affected the shelf life of her raw materials.

Through Namnama’s Food Products, she eventually ventured on using “taro” roots as a way to offer something different and to maximize her meager resources.

“I didn’t allow limited resources to limit my goals. Eventually the sacrifices paid off,” Lolita says.

The product proved to be a hit among her fellow Ilocanos as well as tourists who often go to Namnama’s Food Products specifically for the “taro” chips.

“I didn’t expect the product to be that popular in such a short time. Everyone started ordering and I felt more energized, especially when tourists look for my ‘taro’ chips,” she says.

According to Lolita, the only downside in selling “taro” chips is that it goes in one flavor only. Aside from her taro chips (P60), she also sells the Ilocano Cornick (P60), banana chips (P50) and cassava chips (P60).

She is currently looking for other nutritious crops and vegetables that she can turn into healthy chips.

Lolita says the “taro” chips is not unique and there are a lot of entrepreneurs selling the same product. For her, the difference lies on the attitude of the business owner.

“I think what’s different is how we deal with the lack of resources. Instead of complaining, it is better to supplement what we lack and make the most out of it,” she says.

Lolita share that through her modest earnings, she was able to provide good education for her children.

“It’s the hard work that matters the most,” she says, adding that every member of the family has a role to play in the growth of the family’s business.
