MANILA CITY, METRO MANILA- Shawarma Snack Center or more popularly known as SSC, started as a small carinderia in Malate.
SSC had since earned a strong following of mostly Middle Eastern diners and later on Filipinos who got hooked with the “authentic” Persian food snacks that the place offers.
To accommodate more diners, it opened as a restaurant in Malate and branched out to Parañaque. Interestingly, the small carinderia is still open and fronts the bigger dining area.
SSC offers its famous kabab and shawarma and a wide array of Persian dishes including motabal (grilled eggplant and yoghurt dip at P170), keema (P120), ox brain (P120) and Qurma Beef with Arabic Rice (P120).
The motabal is considered by most diners as the healthiest in SSC’s menu. Made from grilled and pureed eggplants with sesame oil, this makes a perfect vegetarian appetizer for those who opt to start a meal light.
Be careful with pairing it with the pita bread though. The ones served at SSC are thick and can be very stuffing. You would want to spare some more room for the other dishes.
For Chinkee of One Big Bite, the perfect harmony of spices, oils and ground beef of SSC’s keema makes it the benchmark for other local Persian restaurants.
Eating a perfectly poached egg or an omelet is probably the closest thing to eating SCC’s ox brain. The dish is made more savory by the minced spices.
If you want to try Persian food but still you don’t want to deviate from the local flavors, then SSC’s Qurma Beef with Arabic Rice is the dish for you.
In this Southbound.ph post by Betty, she describes the meal as having a striking similarity with the very Pinoy beef kaldereta.
Those looking for some booze after a hearty meal at SSC might be disappointed because the place does not serve alcohol. However, diners can order some sheesha for just P195. You and your friends can take turns in sipping fruity flavors through these Persian pipes while having a nice chat.
Should you feel like going Persian for a change, the SSC in Malate might be worth a visit.
