BAGUIO CITY, BENGUET – Not until you settle down will you notice that something seems to be wrong – coffee mugs don’t have ears, the handle broken or chipped.
But that is exactly what they want you to notice at Kape Diperensya. The coffee shop is located inside Arko ni Apo Art Gallery, owned by acclaimed visual artist Ben-Hur Villanueva.
“We use discarded cups, those people would normally discard or throw away,” says Lolit, who, along with his artist son Bumbo, manages the coffee shop.
It is small yet cozy place, you leave your shoes or slippers at the door, pick a table and sit down on the low chairs or on the floor.
While you wait for your coffee, you can look around the various wood carvings, artworks and other traditional Cordilerra artifacts on display.
As mentioned in this post on igougo.com, every item is a conversation piece.
And then there’s the soya coffee. Lolit says their soya coffee, along with the organic sugar, is sourced from the Kalinga mountains. A cup of soya coffee (P80) is served with a saucer of Danish cookies.
If you are an avid coffee drinker, you probably will have a strong opinion about the soya coffee. I am not, so the best description I can come up with: it does have a soy after taste, like your morning taho, but with a hint of coffee.
They also serve Pesto Pasta, so that should be worth trying. Ben-Hur himself tends to a small garden as a hobby in his studio upstairs so I’m guessing some of the herbs used come from there.
Ideally, you check out Ben-Hur’s gallery first and then cap your visit with a cup of soya coffee downstairs. If you’re lucky, he may even sit down with you and you get to have coffee with one of the most prominent Filipino artists today.
