BAGUIO CITY, BENGUET – Aside from its famous baby back ribs, this homegrown food joint serves lasagna with a surprisingly unique yet tasty vegetable twist.

Little John’s Convenience Outpost is located at the Mile Hi Center inside Camp John Hay, just right across Manor Hotel. It is owned and managed by Johnet Flavier, the son of former senator Juan Flavier.

It’s a rather small place, easy to miss since it is in the middle of bigger (and more famous) restaurants and duty-free shops. Inside, though, it is cozy with an open kitchen counter and the menu conveniently written (in pastel colors like pink and blue) on a glass wall.

I ordered the vegetable lasagna (P90) out of curiosity since it was listed in this article as one the “best eats” in Baguio.  I expected a hefty chunk of macaroni loaded with veggies.

Instead, it was a loose bed of slices of roasted eggplant and onions topped with meat sauce and mozzarela cheese. Served with bread (which would have been better if it was French bread), it makes for an ideal appetizer, not too heavy, just enough to tide you over for the main course.

Which, in my case, is always the baby back ribs. At just P145, it makes for a cheap quick-fix for your meat cravings. Served Texas style with coleslaw, the meat is soft (it readily falls off the bone) and the portions filling.

Mich Guevara of Pinoylakwatsa.com says she used to order additional barbecue sauce but it’s no longer for free.

Little John’s also serves pasta, soups, burgers and other sandwiches. Aside from the baby back ribs, their specials (ranging for P150 to P180) also include kebab and chicken tikka.

Should you wonder about the crayons on your table, the restaurant uses recycled paper as placemats. Kids (and even adults) can while away the time drawing while waiting for their orders. One side of the wall is actually a mini-gallery of frame artworks drawn by customers.

For couples and smaller groups, probably the most coveted tables are those near the window. This affords you a scenic view of Camp John Hay’s pine trees and of course, now and then a whiff of Baguio’s crisp mountain air.
