TAGUIG CITY, METRO MANILA – For these entrepreneurs, chichirya need not be junk food all the time. Sure you’ve heard of tahong chips but have you ever tasted luyang dilaw or yellow ginger chips? How about onion and garlic chips?

Mila Velez, Fannie Guanzon, and Andrew Poblete knew that they had to develop products that are not only healthy but are also interesting enough for consumers.

They soon put up Herbs Best International with the goal of producing unique and healthy organic chips.

“In the market today, you rarely see healthy chichirya. Sadly, kids are very fond of chirchirya so there has to be a way that we can make them eat healthy, without lessening the appeal of the snack,” says Mila, who is also a registered nurse

Mila says their products do not have any form of artificial additives or food preservatives. The chips are also full of health benefits. For instance, the luyang dilaw chips can help prevent tumors.

Mila adds that the onion and garlic chips do not have that strong smell and that even the pickiest of kids can enjoy the taste of the product.

At 75 pesos, Mila says parents can give their children highly-nutritious chips which she says are really sellable. Though patronized by a very limited market, she sees this as a positive sign considering the lack of awareness among consumers of the benefits of eating organic food.

Aside from their best-selling chips, Herbs Best International also markets healthy chocolates and juice drinks. It is also the only company selling natural noodles that are oven-cooked which is healthier than traditional noodles, Mila adds.

“There are lots of natural or organic food out in the market but the question is, was it prepared in the right, or most healthy manner?” says Mila.

She says Herbs Best International will continue to make products that are organic and healthy for Filipino consumers.
