PARAÑAQUE, METRO MANILA – For entrepreneur Jennie Orros, Jaq’s  Kitchen is her way of showing that everyone can eat healthy without sacrificing a meal’s good taste.

Jaq’s Kitchen, named after Jennie’s daughter, is brand of unique pasta sauces made tastier with the addition of truly Filipino favorites like tuyoaligueitlog na pulalongganiza, and tahong.

“My husband, kids, and friends are my guinea pigs. They are my number one critic and they’re the reason that I’ve put up the business,” Jennie says.

She says after a series of trial and error, she opened the restaurant in 2003 confident enough to offer it to at least a limited market.

The outdoor market of Salcedo Village where the hands-on Jennie interacts with her business’ patrons is where she learned to listen to customer suggestions.

With the suggestions she is able to collect, she was able to offer some serving tips on using the pasta sauces with different dishes to customers.

“I try to maximize that one day of interacting with the customers because they really know what they want and they tell you what’s needed so that you can improve the quality of your product,” Jennie says.

By asking what can be improved with her pasta sauces, Jennie is able to experiment with more flavors like her vodka-infused tinapa, spicken (Spinach and Chicken), vegetarian fetacinni, creamed shitake pesto, tuna with capers and olives, red tuna pesto, Portobello mushroom pâté, and duck liver pâté, among others.

Her sauces are perfect for health conscious individuals like her, who often choose chicken and fish over pork on their pasta and salads. She sells the pasta sauces for P250 to P330.

The taste of her pasta sauces, particularly the adobong tahong and tuyo with red egg is made distinctly flavorful with Jennies’ choice of not mixing any kind of preservative in it. She also uses canola oil in all of the sauces.

With plans of exporting her product in different countries, Jennie aims to make Jaq’s Kitchen a world-class brand that Filipinos can be proud of.

The working mother adds that Filipino entrepreneurs are not lacking in talent, they just need the perfect timing. “If you believe in your product, be even more daring. You really have to believe,” Jennie says.

“There are a lot of facets of being a mom. Don’t just be confined with doing what you’re expected to do as a mother, exceed those expectations and you might get the best of both worlds.”
