MUNTINLUPA, METRO MANILA – Luke Macababbad had a regular job in the corporate world but his fondness of beekeeping eventually led him into putting up a company of his own.
In 2005, Luke started making use of honey from his bee farm with the help of his father-in-law, Benjamin Villanueva who was a chemist, and sold the products through his newly established company, Dielle Honey Wines.
The wine is composed of pure honey extracts instead of the usual sugar. Compared to traditional or imported wines, the locally made honey wine is healthier because it contains twice the anti-oxidants found in wines.
Jun says the additional fruits flavors such as of wild berries or bignay, mango, and the Philippine plum or duhat, which are sourced from Cagayan Valley, add to the taste of the honey wine.
Jun adds that by using local ingredients, they are trying to make the wine-drinking experience more attuned to Filipino taste and perception.
“Wine drinking might be a little intimidating to regular Pinoys. Their more used to the term alak. This is our way of making wine a lot closer and familiar to Filipino tastes,” he says.
Each bottle of honey wines costs only 250 pesos Pay an additional 30 pesos and the bottle will be put in a box ready to be given as a gift.
Jun says they are very aggressive on marketing the wines in bazaars so as to make their proudly Filipino product more visible to everyone, not just to those living in the south.
“Other Asians are very fond of our honey wines, we hope Filipinos will learn to appreciate it just as much,” says Jun adding that the product is a potential driver of tourism in the country if only it gets the support of local consumers.
Dielle’s Honey wines are now being sold at the Christmas Shop Expo at the World Trade Center which will run until November 29.
