MAKATI CITY, METRO MANILA – A group of student entrepreneurs has found ways to turn spirulina into a healthy food product.
In 2009, Ateneo de Manila University students Kimberly Ong, Katherine Cheng and Justin dela Cruz, through their company AlgaVentures, introduced the use of spirulina a protein-rich alga in some food products.
The students were also seeking to contribute in the fight against malnutrition particularly in the poorest areas of the country.
“In India, spirulina is said to be effective in reversing the effects on malnutrition,” says Katherine, adding her group is using spirulina for its chocolate, cheese and peanut butter spreads.
Justin explains that spirulina matches the nutrients under the government’s Sangkap Pinoy seal, which is the measuring stick of the nutritional value of food products for Filipinos.
The group says that instead of selling the formulation of their products to big companies, they decided to participate in feeding programs particularly for the residents of the GK Gabaldon in Nueva Ecija.
Residents of Gabaldon are now using spirulina as an ingredient for a tea product that is brewed and produced locally.
