MAKATI CITY, METRO MANILA – The kapeng barako is now available to more coffee drinkers all over the world.

This Philippine coffee variety is now one of the products supported by Kfee, a German manufacturing company specializing in coffee-making machines and other innovative products.

The German company has included kapeng barako in its array of instant encapsulated coffee for their K-fee Capsule Machine to allow more coffee drinkers to enjoy this unique Filipino treat, says Pacita “Chit” Juan.

Chit, who co-chairs the Philippine Coffee Board Incorporated, says this coffee variety is now in capsule form so people around the world can try it.

Kapeng barako is grown in only four countries namely Ethiopia, Malaysia, Laos and here in the Philippines, that is why we prioritized this particular variety of coffee so that we have a bigger shot on global competitiveness with our products,” shares Chit.

She says more and more coffee drinkers are now opting to use coffee machines, thus it is necessary for kapeng barako to be marketed in new, innovative ways.

“Yes we have been exporting coffee in other countries but those are usually green or raw beans, but these products usually deteriorate by the time they are shipped and not that great-tasting any more,” says Chit, who adds that capsules preserve the roasted quality of the coffee.

She says she is hoping that other Philippine coffee varieties will soon be made available to more foreign markets through companies like K-fee.

“Soon, I hope to see other Philippine coffee varieties like the Benguet Arabica, Cavite Excelsa, and Gourmet Robusta being served in Europe with K-fee as a strategic partner,” Chit says.

The kapeng barako and the Kfee machines are currently on exhibit at the Coffee Origins 2010 coffee event at Greenbelt 5 until October 20.
