BATAC, ILOCOS NORTE  — If you want to have a taste of  pancit miki in Ilocos, then Jannet’s Miki and Food House is the place to be.

Located in the famous Batac Empanaderia food strip, Jannet’s pancit miki stands out with its savory taste and perfectly firm and thick noodles complemented by soft chicken strips and a rich color from atsuete.

Jannet’s is just one of the more than 15 stalls selling the famous empanada and pancit miki along the busy food strip at the heart of the Marcos bailiwick.

Five years in the business, Mang Bino Gabriel, who owns the food house named after his wife, shares that the secret to their tasty pancit miki is the special noodles.

He says only purest flour is  used in making Jannet’s pancit miki, which makes it tastier compared to the other noodle dishes sold in the food strip.

He says business at Jannet’s is always brisk. Mang Bino’s pancit miki only costs 25 pesos per order, but with the 15 to 20 kilos of pancit miki that he manages to sell per day, he earns about 7,500 pesos a day.

Mang Bino is proud to say that the money from the small business enables him to send his children to school.

The volume of tourists that visit the Batac Empanadahan is what Mang Bino considers the primary reason that his and the rest of the eateries nearby thrive.

Nakakatulong talaga pag may dumadayo, at nasasarapan sa pancit miki namin. Yung

mga sumunod kasi food house ko na ang hinahanap.” (It really helps when visitors eat here and liked our pancit miki. When the next batch of visitors come, they ask for Jannet’s), says Mang Bino when asked on customer patronage.

While most people find the empanada and the pancit miki as the best food tandem, some patrons of the food strip say that the pancit miki is even more enjoyable to dig into when topped with bagnet, the Ilocos counter-part of chicharon.

For more than 20 years now, other street food vendors in Batac say that the empanadahan continues to be the main source of their livelihood. They say they are eager to remain close to the food strip so that they can easily be found by the next foodie in search of another food adventure in Ilocos.
