QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA — In Part 1 of this series, I explained the mechanics of this personal quest wherein I would look for hamburgers the patties of which weigh more than half a pound. The traditional fastfood outlets offer half-pound burgers like McDonald’s Double Quarter Pounder or Wendy’s Baconator. We’re looking for something bigger to devour.
In Part 1, I’ve beaten the Army Navy’s Bully Boy in Tagaytay City, Cavite whose combined patty weight is ¾ of a pound. We now move to Quezon City in Metro Manila to check out the Double Whammy of Wham! Burgers which is a relative lightweight, weighing in at 2/3 of a pound.
Wham! has the regular burger with a 1/3 pound patty, and the Double Whammy has two of those piled on top of each other with more than a generous serving of lettuce flowing over the lips of the buns like an uncontrollable mustache growth. My first impression upon opening the wrapper was that it did not look like anything special — and certainly the Bully Boy at ¾ of a pound looked much more menacing.
The difference presented itself once you sink your teeth into the Double Whammy. Like most flame-grilled burgers, there is a certain bitterness to the meat, but having tried so many burgers in my life this one seemed to taste just a bit more bitter. TipdEATy, which gave the Double Whammy a rating of four out of five pigs, had a similar observation. Could it be the beef or the way it was grilled?
Where’s the beef? Wham! Burgers gets its ground beef from Balintawak, but the patties are made in-store. The particular branch I went to was on Katipunan Avenue just before Santolan and White Plains Avenue — the first Wham! Burgers branch established nine years ago (they now have at least five branches in Metro Manila).
In fairness though, the bitterness was not overpowering. It’s still a welcome treat since flame-grilled burgers are a huge departure from those usual Mc-Jo fastfood burger chains which don’t even have mustard in the condiments section. Plus, unlike most char-grilled burgers, the Double Whammy was quite juicy, as observed also by Blogger Anna.
As for size, I wonder why some consumers find the Double Whammy enormous, or is it just because I can finish burgers like they were tiny spring roll appetizers. Read Krystel’s impressions on the Double Whammy’s serving size here. For P151, I found the Double Whammy wanting, going home with just a tiny morsel of hunger still lingering in the belly. FYI, the Double Whammy with Cheese costs P195, an absurd additional P44 for cheese. Even with the side order of huge French fries the Double Whammy still failed to satiate, and I only weigh 130 pounds.
In summary, the Double Whammy (at least the one served to me on that particular day and time) was flavorful yet a little bit on the bitter side, has a generous serving of veggies, and the establishment has a complete offering of condiments with various optional sauces for the burger. It was tightly and neatly packed, belying the 2/3 pound burger within, and the service was quick and friendly.
But there are more out there — Monster Burgers waiting to be conquered, and I have my eyes set on a one-pound burger waiting to be devoured. Stay tuned.
