The best banana split in Baliuag

BALIUAG, BULACAN – Except for Baliwag Lechon and Baliuag University, I’m not familiar with anything else in this small but busy town. A friend brought me there recently and one of the more notable places we went to is this bakeshop-cum-restaurant called Lin-Mer’s.

My friend, a true-blue Bulakenyo, says Lin-Mer’s is one of the more popular “hang-out” for young people, especially students of Baliuag University, which is just around half a kilometer away. Despite the narrow road, and the constant flow (and noise) from buses, jeepneys, and tricycles plying the two-lane street going to Lin-Mer’s, I’m guessing students still head to this place not only for food but also for their free WiFi connection.

Seriously, though, Lin-Mer’s has such a diverse offering of food from pastries, rice meals, noodles and pasta, as well as a number of dessert-type meals.

Lin-Mer’s actually looks like two stores, a bakeshop and a restaurant, stuck together side-by-side. The bakery part is open with bread stacked in glass-enclosed cabinets while a doorway on the side leads to the restaurant.

A wall in the restaurant is converted into a display shelf for cakes in  various sizes and designs and sizes. Obviously this bakeshop makes cakes for special occasions; another set of shelves house cakes that are  being offered for sale. Take your pick from blueberry cheese cake, cookies and cream, black forest, or a staple of rectangular-shaped roll cakes, which are no different from Red Ribbon or Goldilocks.

With such a long list of items in their menu, it was quite hard make a choice as to whether we would be dining on rice meals, pasta, or noodles.

One of the waiters graciously offered their best seller, the pancit Malabon (not a Baliuag original but said to be a specialty). This item didn’t taste any different from other ones I’ve tasted. The only difference is that it has a lot more sauce and boiled egg slices, but relatively cheaper too at only P50 pesos per order.

Too late, I was told that the chicken mami was actually better. Blogger “Dith” says it’s the best chicken mami she’s ever tried. I must come back and try that one. As for my companion, he dined on sisig rice, which was somewhat spicier because it’s been liberally sprinkled with chopped red pepper. Too bad he wasn’t into spicy food.

After the main course, I ordered their banana split. I chose it over the much bigger buko fiesta, which is good for two or more people. Few restaurants that are in the category as Lin-Mer’s would offer these kinds of desserts.

The banana split was a welcome treat. It had four pieces of sliced bananas topped with three scoops of ice cream (a combination of chocolate, vanilla and strawberry). The ice cream scoops are then smothered in whipped cream, dashed with strawberry syrup, then sprinkled with small pieces of chocolate and rainbow sprinkles. The last part are three sliced cherries on top of the syrup.

I’ve seen a lot of banana split servings but this one so far is the best-looking for me. The banana split tasted nothing short of heavenly and easily beats a lot of other ice cream desserts I’ve tasted in the past. Until I find a better looking and better tasting banana split somewhere else, I’d say the one in Lin-Mer’s is still the best.

Lin-Mer’s Bakeshop and Restaurant is located at Tibag, Baliuag, Bulacan. For deliveries, they can be reached thru (044)7662555.
