QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA– The government will be launching a “product traceability” system that aims to strengthen the potential of the country’s agro-industrial products in the global market.
Dubbed the “Program on Philippine Traceability for Revitalized Agricultural Competitiveness Enhancement or P-TRACE,” this system will be established to help track the movement of food products including document distribution and production inputs and processes.
It can also assist in identifying and taking prompt measures against food safety concerns or quality control issues.
The three-year joint project is a collaboration between various government agencies led by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Department of Agriculture (DA).
The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is also being tapped for possible funding assistance under a debt-for-development swap agreement with the Italian Government through the Italian Cooperation Agency.
“The proposed P-TRACE is seen vital for the sustained access of our exports in the world market. The lack of traceability mechanism resulted in the recall of some of the country’s exports,” said DTI Undersecretary for Regional Operations and Development Group (RODG) Merly Cruz.
The system will initially be implemented in five priority projects in the agriculture and fisheries sector–banana chips and crackers, fresh and processed pineapples, desiccated coconut, chilled tuna and dried mango.
The system is also expected to provide assistance to marginalized farmers and benefit local consumers.
“With P-TRACE in place, we expect our farmers and food producers meet international food quality, safety and traceability standards, warranting that Philippine products are safe and do not run into barriers to trade,” Cruz added.
