MANILA CITY, METRO MANILA – The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) has allotted additional funds for several government programs aimed at ushering in more tourists to the country.

The P182.2-billion government infrastructure program for 2012 will be used to build airports, roads and bridges that are important in making tourist spots more accessible to visitors.

Other specific projects include a P8.1-billion budget for the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) intended for the construction of access roads to airports and to roll-on/roll-off (RORO) ports leading to various tourist destinations such as Boracay, Palawan, Bohol, Bicol, Cebu, Mindanao and Northern and Central Luzon.

A total of P1.2 billion will be placed for the development of the New Bohol International Airport in Panglao, while P1 billion will be directed to the Puerto Princesa Airport Development.

The Department of Tourism (DoT) will be given an additional P18.6 million for its international promotions project in Yeosu, Korea and another P12.5 million to strengthen local tourism promotion activities.

Various national and satellite parks in the country will likewise undergo development, beautification, preservation, and necessary maintenance for hosting arts and cultural activities.

The government is hoping to attract around 10 million visitors by the end of 2014 under the new tourism campaign “It’s More Fun in the Philippines.”

“The Aquino administration has envisioned a sustainable and well-designed tourism program for the country. A robust tourism sector can fuel up the economy so we can provide more jobs in local communities, as well as raise our national profile as a premier tourist destination,” Budget chief Florencio Abad said.

The tourism sector is placed under President Aquino’s “Social Contract with the Filipino People” along with business process outsourcing, semiconductor and electronics, agriculture and fisheries, and infrastructure development.
