MAKATI CITY, METRO MANILA – Despite some headway, less than 15 percent of Filipino firms have yet to actually finish their cloud computing implementation, according to a survey by software security firm Symantec.
The survey, entitled “2011 State of Cloud Computing Survey – Philippines Key Findings”, covered several hundred decision makers among 100 companies in the Philippines. Some of the respondents are in manufacturing, banking and finance, and telecommunications.
The survey revealed that only a few of them have actually completed their implementation of various cloud computing services, from software-as-a-service (SaaS), platform-as-a-service (PaaS), to public or private cloud services.
In addition, expectations are also not being met in these implementations.
For instance, some of the companies expected around 75 percent gain in operational savings though the reality is it is only 57 percent. Meanwhile, operational efficiency was expected to increase at 91 percent while reality was only at 52 percent.
Symantec Philippines Senior Country Manager Luichi Robles said lack of experience and familiarity with cloud computing services are among the main causes why Philippine companies are not fully realizing their expectations in cloud computing.
Companies are also unable to find better services that would allow them to utilize cloud computing services without sacrificing their existing facilities.
“Companies would want to maximize their equipment without the added costs. That’s really what these companies were thinking when they thought of implementing cloud computing,” Robles said.
But Robles stressed that even with some unmet expectations companies are still looking at cloud computing for long-term utilization. At least 76 percent of those surveyed are already discussing the possibility of using cloud computing services.
“It shows that cloud computing definitely isn’t going to be a fad. It’ll be a natural progression towards improving operations while cutting down on costs,” Robles said.
Just recently, the company unveiled the Release 6 of its Symantec Storage and Availability Management products. These include Veritas Storage Foundation 6.0, Cluster Server 6.0, Cluster File System 6.0, Dynamic Multi-Pathing 6.0, and Operations Manager 4.1.
Additionally, the company launched Symantec ApplicationsHA 6.0 and VirtualStore 6.0. These applications are all targeted at allowing customers to utilize their existing hardware as part of their own cloud computing services.
