MAKATI CITY, METRO MANILA – Contrary to what has been reported, Samsung is not leaving the netbook business.
In fact, the company is awaiting the arrival of Intel’s new Atom processors, codenamed “Cedar Trail”, which Samsung will incorporate in its latest netbook models.
Eric Sulit, Samsung Philippines Head of Information Technology Business, stressed that the company sees the netbook business as one of its strongest areas, particularly in markets where most of the population still purchase low-priced hardware.
Sulit noted that the rumors started when Samsung did not present its product lineup during a product presentation in November.
“When they didn’t see the netbook lineup it was misconstrued as Samsung is leaving the netbook business,” he says.
He noted that the netbook business in the Philippines is particularly big in terms of volume. This is because many Filipinos still do not have desktop or laptop computers. Netbooks, being relatively cheaper than most notebooks, fit within the budget of most Filipinos.
“PC penetration in the Philippines is very low and that is because of the cost of computers. Filipinos will be looking for price point. Because of the huge market, the Philippines can become the fastest growing market for this particular type of device,” Sulit said.
The only time that the netbook will lose its edge in the market is when laptops would be priced about the same as netbooks now and when the upcoming ultrabooks – very thin and very light full function laptops – would be priced just the same as ordinary laptops.
As for the netbook, Sulit said that it would continue to be a favored device for first-time PC users and even students where a small laptop would be more preferred.
“It’ll take some time before the netbook would go away, even if there would be tablet PCs and smartphones,” he said.
