MAKATI CITY, METRO MANILA – Smart Communications finally gets its hands on the much-awaited Apple iPhone 4S.
In a press release, Smart announced that the iPhone 4S will be available for reservations to Smart subscribers on December 16 (Friday), the same day that Globe will also introduce the device.
This puts to rest months of speculation that Globe has lost its exclusivity with Apple devices, which it held on to for four years.
Smart Communications Public Affairs Head Ramon Isberto earlier stated that the iPhone 4S will be introduced as schedule despite rumors that Smart may not be able to offer the device to its subscribers.
Similarly, during a the launch of its LTE plans in late November, Globe Telecom President and CEO Ernest Cu also stressed that Globe will continue to launch Apple products, particularly the iPhone 4S.
While there are no figures stating the number of iPhone users, the iPhone is arguably one of the most successful mobile phone series in the Philippines.
Despite Globe being the official carrier of the previous generation iPhones, many owners had their devices modified or “jailbroken” to allow them to use non-Globe SIM cards.
In fact, sellers in places such as Greenhills, San Juan would sell gray market iPhones, with prices ranging from P20,000 to P40,000 depending on the generation. It is also a more favored smartphone as it features full Internet browsing capabilities and integration with social networking services such as Twitter and Facebook.
Currently, Globe is selling the iPhone 4 in both postpaid and prepaid. The new iPhone 4S runs on a 1 gigahertz dual core A5 processor, twice as powerful as the previous single-core A4 processor and is also the same processor used in Apple’s iPad tablet device.
It also runs the latest iOS5, which has an integrated online storage service called iCloud. Another unique feature of the iPhone 4S is an intelligent software assistant named “Siri” which interacts with the phones’ users.
The iPhone 4S comes in 16, 32, and 64 gigabytes of memory capacity. No pricing yet has been set by either Globe and Smart though the prepaid model could be around P60,000.
