PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, PALAWAN– This province has been named the country’s top producer of seaweeds, accounting for more than 90 percent of production last year.
According to data released by the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA), more than 90 percent of the produce comes from Palawan, including the estimated 444,355.44 metric tons supplied in 2010.
This industry has likewise helped generate more employment owing to its labor-intensive factor and also provides a lucrative source of livelihood for the fishermen.
The agency, meanwhile, stressed the need to further expand the modernization of the industry and to encourage more producers and seaweed farmers to participate in the processing.
There are currently 19 seaweed-producing municipalities in Palawan. Among the top suppliers include Cagayoncillo, Agutaya, Roxas, and Balcabac.
