NAGA CITY, ALBAY— If water hyacinths are the main culprit for clogging some of our river systems, the people of Barangay Tinago considers this aquatic plant the main source of their income.

From the harvesting, processing to handcrafting, Romy Saison says the water hyacinths have been of great help in generating jobs for them especially since their town has only about five percent of agricultural land.

These plants are commonly found in polluted streams, feeding upon pollutants and can double in just five to 15 days. Water hyacinths differ from that of water lilies in their lavender flowers with yellow spots.

With the Naga River located just west of Tinago, it has become a thriving industry for this town’s residents that they were able to form their own Tinago Water Hyacinth Handicrafts Development Association

The locals produce bags, boxes, organizers, place mats, coin purses and wallets out the plant some conceive as flood-causing pests.

Their products are affordable too—from just P5 for a coin purse to P1, 500 for some of their bags as the most expensive.
