TABUK, KALINGA— In an attempt to lure farmers here to open new plantation areas to cacao, the Department of Agriculture distributed some 10,000 seedlings in two barangays.

The Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPAG), an agency under DA, distributed the seedlings to barangays Balong and Bantay.

Cacao suits the soil and climatic condition of the two barangays, where fruit production is a major industry. After educating them, the farmers saw the potential income from this high-value crop and requested to plant them in their farms, said Teresa Desay, program coordinator at OPAG.

The cacao tropical fruit tree is a high source of raw material in chocolate production, seen to have higher revenue returns than coffee, added Desay.

Unlike other seasonal fruits, cacao bear fruits year-round especially for the varieties that come from established cacao farms in Conner, Apayao, an area known for its grapes, lanzones, rambutan and other high-value crops.

As additional farming intervention to farmers, the OPAG provided 16 units of plastic drums for water impounding, four knapsack sprayers, five PH units to check soil acidity and information materials on cacao production.
