MAKATI CITY, METRO MANILA — As Globe Telecom prepares to spend $790 million to overhaul its entire infrastructure, a number of its programs are also being revamped including its corporate social responsibility (CSR) projects.
During a recent announcement, Globe Telecom President Ernest Cu said the company’s multi-million dollar investment intends to integrate the company’s operations, including its CSR projects.
The investment would allow Globe to fully utilize its wireless infrastructure to fulfill its projects related to education, entrepreneurship activities, service delivery to remote places, health monitoring, among others.
“Globe continues to develop mobile and internet technology solutions to help raise the bar of the Philippines’ educational system, address social problems such as access to capital entrepreneurial opportunities as well as peacekeeping and provide support to the national government in delivering social services in inexpensive, fast, and meaningful means,” Cu said.
Some of the education-related projects of Globe Telecom are the Text2Teach in cooperation with Nokia, which provided mobile teaching equipment to 330 public elementary schools; Internet connectivity to 2,000 public high schools; and information and communications training for at least 250 secondary school teachers.
The company also provided mobile SIM (subscriber identification module) cards to several thousand recipients of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4P) program of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).
The 4P aims to provide financial support to poor and marginalized families under the condition that their children are placed in schools and that the women take regular health care.
Using its GCash mobile money transfer system, Globe also worked with the United Nations World Food Program to provide financial help to at least 2,000 families that were affected by recent natural disasters.
It also has a partnership with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) that connects the institution to rice farmers to ensure sustainability and stock availability of rice.
Globe Telecom also recently introduced its BridgeCom mobile SIM to be offered to at least 10,000 to recipients of its CSR programs. The SIM provides text rates of P0.50 per message and voice call rate of P0.05 per second.
The company announced in mid-November that it is overhauling its entire infrastructure into an all-IP network, aimed at providing full broadband connectivity through LTE (long-term evolution), as well as improve its internal operations.
The overhaul is already ongoing and improvements in service are expected to happen in December or early next year.
