NAGA CITY, ALBAY— With no formal training on making handcrafted jewelries, Marianne Olaño credits her success on two things – perseverance and sheer creativity.
Marianne had writing stints for a television network and various publications after graduating cum laude from Ateneo de Naga with a degree in Development Communication.
Three years after her stint as a media practitioner, she then decided to become a full-time entrepreneur, which she figured would give her more financial freedom.
She tried one business after another before trying her luck in designing handcrafted jewelry born out of her fondness for trinkets and other accessories.
“Baycrafts Jewelry is something like a mix and match of different materials like shells, crystals fabrics and charms all fused into one piece,” she describes.
A few years after establishing her jewelry business, she was presented an opportunity to present her business plan to the Business in Development (BiD) challenge.
The Netherlands-based BiD network gives small and micro entrepreneurs (SMEs) the chance to pitch their plans in exchange for a business grant.
Her idea to expand and systematize the selling of jewelry through the Internet topped other international finalists under the Retail category in last year’s contest.
Since then, her business has evolved from not just the usual kikay stuff to a variety of formal, casual, and wedding pieces.
The all-Pinoy made accessories range from P95 to P700 while designer pieces starts at about P1, 200. She runs a boutique in Naga and also sells her products through the Baycrafts Jewelry website.
