PASIG CITY, METRO MANILA – If there’s one thing besides the jeepney that is unique inFilipino culture, it’s our very own sari-sari stores.

Small as they may seem, sari-sari stores have proven to be a very vital part of our country’s economic growth. This is why the Micro Ventures Foundation (MVF) continues to support and strengthen its service to store owners through its Hapinoy Store Program.

Four years since it was established, the Hapinoy has been recognized here and abroad for its thrust on not only assisting but also educating micro entrepreneurs on how to sustain and run their own sari-sari stores.

Among these include being recipient of a grant from the United Nation’s “Project Inspire”. Co-founders Bam Aquino and Mark Ruiz were recently awarded “Asian Social Entrepreneurs” by the Schwab Foundation.

“Hapinoy is not just about helping our micro entrepreneurs earn income to uplift their lives, but we also help align and promote stronger family ties as well,” says MVF Executive Director TJ Agulto, one of the program’s training coaches.

For “mom-preneur” Jane Enciso, her sari-sari store business has come a long way since she became a partner of the Hapinoy Program two years ago.

“Back then, I used to think running a sari-sari store was simple since it was just a small business. But having undergone Hapinoy’s training program and support service, I learned that I can still expand my store. We also share what we learn with other store owners in the community,” Jane says.

Jane believes that a micro enterprise like a sari-sari store can contribute greatly to every Filipino’s role on helping alleviate poverty especially in rural areas across the country.

“I hope the Hapinoy will reach other families and help them uplift their lives. Perhaps one day, through programs like these, no Filipino will have to struggle putting food on the table every day,” she says.
