MANILA CITY, METRO MANILA – The game development industry in the Philippines continues to grow as the global gaming industry expands with the availability of games being developed on mobile devices.
So far, the local game development community has grown to at least 14 companies hiring nearly 1,000 workers.
In addition, there are also hobbyists who are creating games on different platforms, including mobile phones and tablet PCs (particularly those that run Google Android operating system) and even social games on Facebook.
The Game Development Association of the Philippines (GDAP), an association of professional game development firms, is hoping to get more college students to get interested in game development.
As part of their efforts, the group is organizing the 2011 Philippine Game Development Festival (PGDF), which would highlight new trends in platform development, as well as outsourcing requirements in the video game industry.
The event, which would be held on December 9 at De La Salle-College of St. Benilde, will have speakers from several local game development firms who would discuss trends in various genres, including social and casual gaming, programming for Android and Apple iOS, Flash game development, among others.
Students can also participate in development contests, including “Game On!” that is targeted at college and university students. So far, 15 groups have been shortlisted to be part of the contest.
They could win in the following categories: Cultural Awards, Innovation Awards, Best PC/Mac Game, Best Handheld/Mobile Game, Best Browser-Based Game, and Best Indie Game.
