MAKATI CITY, METRO MANILA – With the release of its latest line of Internet-enabled TVs, Samsung is encouraging Filipino software programmers to develop applications that can be integrated into its Smart TV line.
The Samsung Smart TV Apps Congress aims to have developers create applications based on the Smart TV’s operating system.
The applications must be able to maximize the capabilities of the Smart TV, which itself already has a number of Internet functions, as web browsing, viewing videos and music, social networks, and uses communications tools such as Skype.
Ariel Arias, Samsung Philippines Head for Audio-Visual Business Unit, said the Philippines is already known its prolific and creative software developers, most of them developing applications for foreign clients.
He also emphasized on the potential of having the TV as a multi-purpose device that would benefit people in a household.
“We want to spur Filipino developers to bring their skills to an established platform and that is the TV,” Arias said.
Samsung launched at least four models under its Smart TV line. These are TVs that have wired and wireless Internet capabilities, allowing users to access a variety of online services. The Smart TV line also has a Samsung Apps store wherein users can download applications from games to social apps.
The Smart TV app competition is also being done in other countries, an effort that Samsung is taking to establish its market position in the Internet TV business. Its main competitor locally is Sony, which also introduced several models with Internet capabilities.
Participants in the competition must submit their proposed application on or before November 14. Five proposals will be chosen and each will receive a Samsung Smart TV and P100,000 cash.
