MANDALUYONG CITY, METRO MANILA – Hypermarket operator Puregold is aiming to activate a mobile payment system that would allow shoppers to pay for items without the need for cash.

Puregold would be using Globe Telecom’s GCash payment system, which allows users to pay using credits stored in their mobile phones.

While details on the implementation of the payment system are still being worked out, Globe Telecom Head for consumer Sales Group Ramon Matriano said the system provides convenience to Puregold shoppers as they do not have to carry cash with them.

“Many of Puregold’s patrons are retail store owners who buy items in bulk so it’s a great convenience that they can pay without carrying cash,” Matriano said.

Puregold and Globe have been implementing a number of programs. The company introduced a Globe mobile reloading system through Puregold’s point-of-sale. The first was for ordinary shoppers while the other is specific to Globe’s Autoload Max dealers, many of whom are also Puregold “Aling Puring” members, or sari-sari store owners.

According to Puregold Merchandising and Marketing Director Vincent Co, there are at least 170,000 Aling Puring members. Of this figure, 70,000 are Super Suki members who are owners of a special Globe SIM card that provides special discounts.

Puregold is one of the fastest growing hypermarket operators in the Philippines with over 80 branches. The company is expected to open 100 stores by the end of 2011 and 50 more stores to be opened by the end of 2013.
