MANILA CITY, METRO MANILA – President Benigno Aquino III has approved an additional P500 million package for training of near-hires in an effort to boost the hiring requirements of the business process outsourcing industry in the Philippines.
The budget is on top of the previous P20 million budget allocation provided by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) for training of potential workers in the outsourcing industry.
The new budget was announced by President Aquino during the recently concluded 2011 International Outsourcing Summit in Pasay City. In his speech, Aquino acknowledged that the industry needs investments in manpower development to accommodate the growing requirements of the outsourcing industry.
“I know that you have already experienced great success in doing business in the Philippines, but at the same time, I also know that running a business is never easy, especially one that is so dependent on the available pool of skilled workers,” Aquino said.
The amount would be coursed through the TESDA, which will also work with the Business Process Association of the Philippines (B/PAP), the umbrella organization of outsourcing industries.
The training programs are based on the requirements of the five outsourcing sectors, namely contact centers, business process, animation, software development, game development, and transcription.
Currently, the BPAP puts the number of employees working in various outsourcing industries at a little over 525,000, with the contact center industry employing over 300,000. The outsourcing industry is expected to grow to about $9 billion in 2010.
Based on the B/PAP’s projections in its current Roadmap 2010-2016, the industry is poised to grow by 25 percent in the next five years, with export revenues hitting $25 billion by 2016. In terms of employment, the industry could hire about 1.3 million for the next 5 years.
