PH on track to meet rice self-sufficiency goals, says UN body

QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA – The country’s efforts to achieve rice self-sufficiency by 2013 has gained recognition from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

In a leaflet to promote World Food Day, the FAO mentioned that the “Philippine government, which used to be the world’s largest rice importer, seeking to achieve rice self-sufficiency by 2013… cut imports from more than two million tons last year to less than one million this year.”

The FAO also recognized the successful implementation of irrigation system repairs, establishment of more post-harvest facilities, and construction of farm-to-market roads,  which are part of the intensification program planned to take the Philippines’ rice production to17.46 million tons this year.

Department of Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala said he was thankful for the acknowledgement and vowed to further boost palay production to meet that self-sufficiency target in two years time.

Alcala also recognized that assistance of FAO over the years to help implement programs and projects to improve the productivity and income of Filipino farmers and fishermen and in reducing malnutrition and hunger.

The DA chief added the the Aquino administration would continue to strive in making the Philippines sufficient in rice, staples, and other major farm and fishery products.

FAO is an attached agency of the United Nations and is now celebrating World Food Day with the theme “Food Prices: From Crisis to Stability”.
